Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA, is an application students fill out to be considered for federal financial aid. Filling out the FAFSA is the only way to apply for federal financial aid.

In addition, many states and colleges use your FAFSA information to determine your eligibility for state and school aid. Some private aid providers may use your FAFSA information to determine whether you qualify for their aid as well.

Where do I complete the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be completed online using the official StudentAid.gov website.

Ensure you are visiting the correct website (ending in the .gov) to help avoid fraud. The FAFSA is a free application and you should never have to pay anyone to complete the application for you.

Who should fill out the FAFSA?

Any eligible student* planning to attend an eligible college, university, or trade school should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year starting in their final year of high school.

The student will complete the FAFSA, but for many students a parent/guardian will also need to create an account to provide some of the required information.

* The FAFSA is for US Citizens and eligible noncitizens.  If you do not meet eligibility, you should not complete the FAFSA.  Contact the financial aid office at your institution to see how you should apply for financial aid.

When should the FAFSA be filled out?

The FAFSA opens annually on October 1 and should be filled out every year a student is planning on attending school. When determining when to complete the FAFSA, there are three deadlines that should be kept in mind:

  • Your School Deadline: Your college, career school, or trade school typically has the earliest of all the deadlines. If you’re applying to multiple schools, look up each school’s FAFSA deadline and make sure your form is submitted before then.
  • Your State Deadline: You can receive state grants and scholarships to help fund your education. But to be eligible, you’ll need to fill out the FAFSA form before your state of legal residence’s FAFSA deadline.
  • The Federal Deadline:  This last deadline comes from us, the U.S. Department of Education.

Some of these deadlines may include priority deadlines (an early target to award first-come first serve funds) or regular deadlines (the final cut off).  Students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to help maximize potential award money.
