Meet the Principals
Abby Makowsky
Principal of Mehlville High School
Abby Makowsky is entering her first year as Principal of Mehlville High School. She previously was the Assistant Principal at Mehlville High School for three years. She began her career teaching Social Studies in Jefferson City before joining the Panther Family, where she taught Government and Sociology. Ms. Makowsky holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from William Woods University.
Ms. Makowsky’s favorite part of her job is connecting with students — whether it’s chatting in the cafeteria or celebrating them at graduation. She’s passionate about creating a positive, fun school climate where learning is joyful and relationships matter. Outside of school, she enjoys time with her family, cheering on her son at football, walking her dog Wilson, reading, and working out.
Carlos Espinosa
Assistant Principal of Mehlville High School
Carlos Espinosa is proud to serve as Assistant Principal at Mehlville High School, supporting students with last names A through E, as well as the World Language, Social Studies, and English Language Development departments. This is Mr. Espinosa’s second year at Mehlville High School, though he previously taught Spanish at Oakville High School and Wydown Middle School in the School District of Clayton.
Before entering education, Mr. Espinosa began his career in the business sector as an office manager. He later transitioned into education, working as a teaching assistant at Saint Louis University before stepping into the classroom full-time. During his time in Clayton, he served on several leadership teams and committees, including the Building Leadership Team, Equity Committee, and Professional Development Committee. He also was selected to represent his school in the Equity and Justice Academy in Character Education, focused on inclusion and student voice.
Mr. Espinosa holds multiple advanced degrees, including a Master of Arts in Spanish from St. Louis University, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Webster University, and a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from Maryville University. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Maryville University.
As a school leader, Mr. Espinosa values equity, collaboration and growth. He is committed to creating an inclusive school culture where all students and staff feel a sense of belonging, while using data-informed practices to support learning.
Originally from Cali, Colombia, Mr. Espinosa lives in St. Louis with his wife, three young sons, and golden retriever.
Sarah Gray
Assistant Principal of Mehlville High School
Sarah Gray is a passionate, relationship-centered educational leader with over two decades of experience guiding student achievement, teacher growth and curriculum innovation. She currently serves as Assistant Principal at Mehlville High School, where she supports instructional excellence, leads data-informed decision making, and fosters a positive, student-focused culture.
Ms. Gray’s career spans roles from elementary teacher to district-level instructional coach, Title I reading director, and now school administrator. She has been instrumental in helping to build a positive climate and culture in her capacities, leading professional development, mentoring new teachers, and building collaborative systems that support both academic achievement and educator development. Her leadership is rooted in strong communication, deep content knowledge, and commitment to student success.
Ms. Gray holds three degrees from McKendree University, including a Master’s in Administrative Leadership and a Master of Arts in Teacher Leadership, along with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Her academic foundation, combined with her experiences across K-12 settings, make her a well-rounded and forward-thinking educator.
In Ms. Gray's spare time she enjoys drag racing with her family, running and soaking up as much outside time as possible!
Dr. Brian Metteer
Assistant Principal of Mehlville High School
Dr. Brian Metteer has served as assistant principal at Mehlville High School for the past five years. He earned his doctorate in Educational Administration from Maryville University in 2023. Prior to joining MHS, he was a welder by vocation before becoming a high school English teacher.
In his free time, Dr. Metteer enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters, exploring parks, visiting playgrounds, and winning dance-offs in his living room. In his more quiet moments, he can be found with a book in his hand.
Dr. Metteer is passionate about maintaining a welcoming community, and he believes that MHS has an especially committed staff who share that vision for our students and families. His favorite aspect of his role at school is having the privilege to work with students and learn about the values and experiences that make them unique.
Anna McGuire
Assistant Principal of Mehlville High School
Anna McGuire is entering her first year as Assistant Principal at Mehlville High School. Ms. McGuire has held several roles in the Mehlville School District, serving as a second grade teacher at Wohlwend and MOSAIC elementaries. During that time she assisted with the development of MOSAIC Elementary School. After her time in the classroom, Ms. McGuire was the Instructional Innovation and Data Privacy Specialist for the Mehlville School district where she led professional development and coached educators on leveraging technology to drive innovative teaching. Ms. McGuire holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Missouri and a Master’s in School Administration from Lindenwood University.
Ms. McGuire is passionate about creating relevant, engaging learning experiences that ignite curiosity, empower students, and prepare them for a bright future. She is committed to cultivating a school environment where every student, family, and staff member feels a sense of belonging.
In her free time Ms. McGuire enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and relaxing with her dog Chalupa.
